First, let me express my appreciation to you for visiting my website. I created this site to share my experiences as they relate to assisting my clients in reaching their financial goals. I will also share with you my background and an overview of the types of products and services that I provide.

Although I started working at an early age for family members, I would say my first real job came when I entered high school. My career counselor suggested I enroll in a course named Work Education. The benefits of this course were to prepare students for college by classroom instructions and on the job training in the students’ career of interest. My career choice was Business Law which included Marketing and Distribution. I was fortunate to receive a job placement with a music publication company.

Working for my family is the foundation of my work ethics and it prepared me for the real world, and being an attorney was my dream. I had the best of both worlds; I learned the process of establishing, developing and managing a business working for my family, while being an employee of a corporation which only saw me as a number and a body to get things done. Needless to say I enjoyed working for my family much more than I did the music publication company, but while I was there I did learn something that was very useful, never judge a person.

Little did they know at the music publication company that I owned my home and that I gave up my own business for the education of working for them. I was a teenager in high school and my supervisor was a grown man, married, with children and he was less established than I was. I would just smile at him when he would talk down to me about what I could accomplish if I worked hard and saved my money. I knew he didn’t know me or my background and I was taught not to talk about my family, friends and what I have. People are more often not interested in you but more interested in what they can do to you.

My cousin who is currently a sitting judge is one of stars in my life; when I was in high school one of my mentors. She was preparing me for the challenges of going to college, and as a working attorney she gave me insight of what the work entailed. I leaned toward entertainment law because of my friends; most of them were extremely talented and even before leaving high school they worked in the music business. Some were singers, but most were musicians and you are probably dancing to some of the music they recorded today. I graduated from high school a year early, so I took that summer off to work and save money.

I bought a luncheonette from one of my family members and as I worked that summer I received advice and instructions from my cousin about college, I also was excited and happy for my friends in the music business. I followed their careers and couldn’t wait for them to come off the road and tell me about everything they experienced. It was a great summer, working and preparing for college and hearing the songs my friends performed on the radio and seeing them on the television and some were even in movies. My business was in my neighborhood so my customers were friends that I grow up with and when our friends came home off the road it was like a big party in my store.

The year pasted quickly and the summer was coming to an end; the time for college was drawing near. I remember sitting with my accountant and going over my earnings and the next day I sat with my cousin and we talked about me being a lawyer. My finances were on my mind so, I couldn’t help but to ask what can an attorney right out of college earned. She said, maybe about a good thirty-five to forty thousand dollars. I was just about to turn eighteen and I had already earned over one hundred thousand dollars. Needless to say, I am not an attorney but I did enjoy every minute I spent with my cousin.

I invested more time in building my business and making money, I eventually opened a second business. With my friends in the music business stopping in and inviting me to attend recording sessions and shows, I got bit by the music bug and started spending more and more time away from my businesses. It did not take long to find out that you can not leave a cash business unattended without suffering a monetary loss. That was a lesson that I will never forget, you can not depend on family or friends to be more concerned about your business than you are. I had a choice to make, because by now I was more than a fan or groupie, I was consulting and advising my friends about contracts and other aspects of the entertainment business.

I had to make some hard choices and quickly my financial advisor told me, “You can not keep these cash businesses if you are going to do that music stuff”. He asked do you know who manages their finances and is there a chance they would consider you providing that service? Since I was already advising them, I knew the answer would be yes but, I was not licensed. My financial advisor sponsored and mentored me for one year. I started my career in 1982, contracted and working as a field underwriter for New York Life Insurance Company. After a few months, the company recognized the ability I demonstrated in understanding the products and services that they offered; as well as, my ability to help my clients select which products and services would best meet their needs.

I then moved to other areas of financial planning; such as: Pensions, Retirement and Estate Planning. This decision brought me in direct contact with some of the top banks and bankers in the city as well as attorneys and accountants. Not only did this training put me in a better position to assist my family and friends but, I received awards and recognition in these areas. In addition to becoming one of the top producers in my office, so much so, that the Home Office requested me to assist in the making of a training video that would be used for the purpose of assisting other agents of the company to succeed in these areas.

While working at New York Life, I received a number of requests from my clients who were seeking financing to purchase a home. I also received requests from those needing to secure working capital to start or expand a business. New York Life did not offer these services at that time. So I founded and incorporated my own company, solely for the purpose of assisting my clients with these needs. After six years of being under contract with New York Life, I decided to devote all of my time to my own business to be better able and available for my clients. No one knows what destiny holds for them, I did not create The Washington Consulting Group Inc., for the purpose of making money. I started my company once I understood and recognized the need for someone to advise the general public about the fundamentals of using their resources to build a better financial future.

In closing I would like to say, I thank God, my family, friends and clients because I would most likely be still selling sandwiches, which would not be all that disappointing. I am so appreciative of the faith and trust they had in my commitment to provide them with my best efforts. I live by a simple motto; No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.
